Lupin III Gets Its First 2D Feature-Length Animated Film In 30 Years

The Lupin III franchise is changing things up for a brand-new film, taking it back to 2D Animation! That’s right, a Lupin III film would be heading back to 2D Animation, for the first time in 30 years.

The film has a temporary title for now, Lupin IIIrd The Movie, which will open in Japan in 2025. A new trailer was released for the new film, the ending tagline saying You Don’t Yet Know The Real Lupin III. The last time there was a 2D animated feature-length film for Lupin III was in 1996 titled Lupin III: Dead or Alive. Since then, the closest thing the franchise has had in theaters were specials such as Lupin the IIIrd: Jigen’s Gravestone, Lupin the IIIrd: Goemon’s Blood Spray, and Lupin the IIIrd: Fujiko Mine’s Lie. The 2019 CG animated film, Lupin III the First, the crossover films consisting of Lupin III vs. Detective Conan from 2013, and the 2019 film, Lupin III vs. Cat’s Eye.

Returning to the franchise to direct the new film will be Takeshi Koike, known for Lupin III: The Woman Called Fujiko Mine, Lupin the IIIrd: Jigen’s Gravestone, Lupin the IIIrd: Goemon’s Blood Spray, Lupin the IIIrd: Fujiko Mine’s Lie will direct the film at Telecom Animation Film. Yuya Takashi (Lupin the IIIrd: Jigen’s Gravestone, Lupin the IIIrd: Goemon’s Blood Spray, Lupin the IIIrd: Fujiko Mine’s Lie) is returning to write the screenplay. James Shimoji is returning from the three previous films to compose the film’s music, and Katsuhito Ishii is also returning from the three films as a creative adviser. TMS Entertainment is credited with production and writing. TOHO NEXT will distribute the film.
