We’re living in an age where the widespread adoption of high-speed internet made it possible for movies, TV Shows, comic books, magazines, software, music, and manga to be pirated across the internet with ease thanks to things such as torrent websites and social media. In 2018, Manga Publishers Kadokawa Shoten, Kodansha, Shogakukan, and Shueisha banded together to form the STOP MANGA PIRACY Campaign, where they would distribute information that showed the damage caused by Manga Piracy. Keep in mind that the publishers wanted to show their appreciation and acknowledge readers who have strived to read manga in legal ways.
After the Campaign shared the Thank You ADs on social media, there have been critics who have shared their criticism of the campaign, this included asking questions like “What have you done to improve accessibility to manga outside of Japan?“, or saying that piracy was the only way to access more titles, and the old Piracy would be less common if more were licensed. You can read more about the criticism exclusively on Anime News Network.
