The US Premiere of Miyazaki’s The Boy and The Heron (How Do You Live?) is going on this weekend and Hayao Miyazaki’s newest film has earned $12.8 Million after a successful box office debut of $5.4 Million on Friday at 2,205 theaters, which includes $2.39M previews.
According to Variety, who claims that Hayao Miyazaki’s newest film benefited from the lack of holiday blockbusters such as Warner Bros Wonka and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which would be making their debut in the coming weeks. To be fair, this was one of the biggest films that moviegoers or Studio Ghibli fans have been looking forward to ever since his last film in 2013, The Wind Rises. Hollywood Blockbusters aren’t able to live up to what Miyazaki and his studio offer in terms of quality. It has earned $84 million internationally, with $56 million of that coming from its release in Japan.
It was quite the change-up from last week’s Box Office results. For example, Beyoncé’s Concert Docufilm Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé went from being No.1 to stumbling down to No. 5, a 77% drop that sends a clear picture that nobody can stop Swiftmania. Next up, The Hunger Games prequel film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes took second place, earning $9.4 million, pushing it domestically to $135 million. Finally, another well-known entertainment icon from Japan, Godzilla has continued its rampage at the US Box office, staying in the top five at No. 3 once again, becoming the highest-earning Japanese Live-Action film in North America.
