For Nineteen Years Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away has been sitting on top of Japan’s Box Office chart, now it has finally been dethroned, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Mugen Train. It was widely predicted to take the top spot from the Studio Ghibli classic film Spirited Away, Demon Slayer finally did so on Saturday, December 26. With 4DX screenings of the anime film adaptation of Koyoharu Gotouge‘s manga starting on the same day.
Mugen Train has so far made 32,478,895,850 yen (US$313,513,909) at the Japanese box office in 73 days, making it also the first film in Japanese to reach 32 billion yen (US$309 million) at the Japanese box office on the back of 24,049,907 admissions. Even though Spirited Away isn’t the number one film at the Japanese box office (even with the 2020 re-release being factored in) still holds the record for ticket sales at 24.28 million (including re-releases), due to the lower costs of tickets in 2001/2002, as well as not having IMAX and 4DX screenings, which typically have a higher ticket cost than regular screenings.
